TOKYO -- The Ivy League added to its medal count on Tuesday in Tokyo as Harvard alum Gabrielle Thomas claimed the bronze in the 200 meters.
It is the league's eighth medal of the Games so far and Thomas' first of her Olympic debut.
Also in athletics, Princeton's Julia Ratcliffe turned in an impressive ninth-place finish in the women's hammer throw final for Team New Zealand. Ratcliffe, the 2014 NCAA champion, Ratcliffe went 72.61 meters on her first throw, which had her in third place after the opening round. She would then follow with a 72.69-meter heave, and her third throw resulted in a mark of 71.79.
In the pool, Ashleigh Johnson continued to impress as her Team USA Water polo squad defeated Canada in the quarterfinals, 16-5. Johnson and teammates square off against Team ROC in the semifinals on Thursday morning at 2:30 a.m. EST.
On the baseball diamond, Team Isreal, comprised of four Ivies, fell in a dramatic elimination game to the Dominican Republic, 7-6. The loss ends the run for Columbia's Robb Paller and Yale's Ryan Lavarnway, Ben Wanger and Eric Brodkowitz.
