LEUNG OPENS OLYMPICS WITH WIN OVER MEXICO, NINE IVIES COMPETE IN DAY 1 OF ROWING

TOKYO -- Nine Ivies have successfully competed in the first two full days of Summer Olympic action in the disciplines of softball and rowing.
Brown softball’s Janet Leung started off competition strong with Team Canada, defeating Mexico 4-0 right off-the-bat in the first round of pool play. Following a short turn around, Canada faced Team USA in the second round, but was unable to capitalize on opportunities allowing the United States to claim the 1-0 game. Leung will be back in action on Friday, July 23 at 9:00 p.m. ET against Australia to continue pool play.
Several Ivies made an appearance on the first day of rowing at the 2020 Olympics. Juri-Mikk Udam, former Harvard men’s crew, made his second Olympic debut for Estonia in the men’s quadruple sculls. The Estonia crew fought hard to finish third in their heat to qualify their boat to race in the repechage on Friday, July 24 at 9:40 p.m.
Penn alum Dara Alizadeh made his Olympic debut with Bermuda in the men’s single sculls competition. He finished fourth in heat four to qualify him to compete in the repechage on Friday, July 23 at 7:40 pm ET.
Princeton’s Kathleen Noble made history by becoming the first Ugandan rower at the Olympics as she finished fifth in her heat with a time of 8:21.85. Her time allows her to race in the third repechage on Friday, July 23 at 7:50 p.m.
Princeton’s Gevvie Stone and Yale’s Kristina Wagner finished second in their heat after a respectable rally. The United States duo started off in fifth place after their first 500m, but was able to pull ahead to finish right behind New Zealand. Stone and Wagner will race in the A/B Semifinals on Sunday, July 25 at 9:20/9:30 p.m. ET.
Hannah Scott along with her Great Britain teammates battled against Brown’s Cicely Madden and her United States crew members in heat one of the women’s quadruple sculls. Scott secured third place in their heat, while Madden finished fifth. Scott and Madden qualified to race to in the repechage on Saturday, July 24 at 9:50 p.m. If Great Britain or the United States can finish in the top two, the crew will earn the opportunity to move onto Final A.
Jack Lopas, a former Yale men’s crew member, competed in the men’s double sculls with New Zealand. Lopas and teammate battled Switzerland and Poland for a top two spot, but finished third in their heat. Their performance allows them to compete in the A/B semifinals on Saturday, July 24 at 11:40/11:50 p.m. ET.
